In the past I have strapped a big log to a post and cut each plank off one at a time. This log was smaller so I decided to try a different method. I cut each plank nearly all the way down the log, leaving an inch or so holding it to the rest of the log. This way the whole thing remains stable and I am not left trying to cut a thin plank off a thin log, which would not stand on its own and I sure as hell was not going to hold the piece of wood with one hand while weilding the chainsaw with the other, that's a recipe for losing an arm.
Once all the planks are nearly through I can stand the log on my chopping block and cut through each plank alternating side to side so as to maintain a solid base.
These will eventially be turned into something useful, even if they just become more stool seats.
I really like making three legged stools and bar stools and if I keep it up I will probably become known as The Stool Man, not a sobriquet I aspire to.
